Phishing Sites Harvesting Mobile Numbers Relaunch Attack Over NIN-SIM Unblocking Exercise, NITDA Warns

Following the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), that telecoms subscribers who want their barred SIM unblocked, phishing sites have relaunched fresh attack harvesting mobile numbers of unsuspecting victims.

The National Information Technology Development Agency Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (NITDA-CERRT) has raised the alarm on the activities of the phishing sites as it flagged a social media broadcast to warn telecom subscribers whose mobile lines have been barred of the dangers ahead.

NITDA warned against the deception of the phishing sites that suggest that a barred SIM can be unlocked without linking it up with their National Identity Number (NIN).

“It is pertinent to note that this website, which is accessible via the link (https://bit.ly/NCC-Sim-Unbar-Gov-Ng) is a phishing site that is used to harvest users phone numbers, redirect users to other site that are malicious and could be used to steal sensitive information of users”, NITDA stated.

According to the Agency, this site was also designed to misinform and mislead unsuspecting members of the public saying that the

public should disregard such broadcast and visit only official websites of government agencies to confirm authenticity of any report.

“Also note that all lines that have been barred must be registered and

linked with a NIN before they can be unbarred”, said NITDA.
